The giver of zakat should intend to obey Allah, who has bestowed upon him wealth, and it is obligatory for him to give this portion of his wealth. The giver should also intend to purify himself from the effects of stinginess and show compassion towards the poor and needy. As for the receiver, he should take it to fulfill his needs and to maintain his dignity so that he does not have to take anything from the wealth of others. And Allah knows best.
